About Us

Since early 1955 Troop 441 and its’ younger brother Cub Pack 805C (founded 1952) have been sponsored by the Old River Men’s Club. E. W. Ward, Scott Temple and many other members of Downey’s founding civic leadership were members and supporters of the Old River Men’s Club and Troop 441 / Pack 805. With Downey’s incorporation in 1956 and the unification of the school districts in 1960, the troop and pack continued to meet at Rives Avenue and Meadow Park elementary schools and the park district headquarters at Apollo (Imperial) Park. To date 90 members of the troop have earned the highest rank awarded by the Boy Scouts – Eagle Scout. Many other members of the troop and cub pack have earned their own religious organization’s scouting emphasis awards as well – also a very high honor. Scout Troop 441 and Cub Pack 805 are associated with the Frontier District of the Los Angeles Area Council, Boy Scouts of America. Troop 441 meets every Tuesday night at 7pm and, the Cub Pack meets at Apollo Park as well on the third Monday night of the month.

Boy Scout Troop 441 is more than 60 years old, having been organized in 1944 as part of the youth program serving the Old River School District in the southwest corner of the yet un-incorporated community of Downey, California. In it’s history, the troop has been sponsored by several business and service organizations from the community – the Clearwater Lumber Company and the 20-30 Club to name a few. Since early 1955 Troop 441 and its’ younger brother Cub Pack 805C (founded 1952) have been sponsored by the Old River Men’s Club. At various periods of time in the 1950’s, 60’s and 70’s both the pack and the troop expanded to form two units 441 and 1441 and 805C and 441C. From the middle 1950’s well into the late 1970’s the troop also had an older brother – Explorer Post 441X which served the community primarily in the area of Civil Defense and Emergency communication services. In keeping with the principals set down by the Boy Scouts of America, Troop 441 and Cub Pack 805 strive to educate young members of the community about their “duty to God and Country” the responsibility to “help other people at all times” and to keep themselves “physically strong, mentally awake and morally straight”.

In its early history the Troop and Pack met and camped at various locations within the Downey area primarily using the facilities and property owned by the Old River School District and the local park district. The Old River Men’s Club was a major force in the development of the local school district and park property including Apollo Park (formerly Imperial Park) and Apollo Neighborhood Center (formerly Rives Ave. Elementary School) as well as the properties formerly occupied by Meadow Park, Old River (new and old) E.W. Ward and Imperial elementary schools and West Middle School. E. A plaque still stands in testament to the efforts of the Old River Men’s Club support of the Old River School District as well as the youth sports programs at Apollo Park.

During its history Troop 441 and Cub Pack 805 have served more than 4,000 boys from the community of Downey. In 1994, the troop celebrated the 50th anniversary in a three day event attended by over 1000 former members and scouting families. To date 90 members of the troop have earned the highest rank awarded by the Boy Scouts – Eagle Scout. Many other members of the troop and cub pack have earned their own religious organization’s scouting emphasis awards as well – also a very high honor. Since the mid-1950’s members of the troop have attended almost every national or world Scouting Jamb-O-Ree. Graduated members of the troop and pack have served their country honorably in the United States military as well as serving in elected public office at the local, city, county, state and national levels. Law enforcement and various emergency response agencies across Southern California also enjoy the contributions of former members of Scout Troop 441 and Cub Pack 805. Today former members of the troop can be found associated with governmental agencies and educational institutions; as well as successful members of the business and professional community across the western United States.

Members of Troop 441 and Cub Pack 805 can regularly been seen participating in various civic, religious and family organization events and service projects throughout the City of Downey. The honor of being the Color Guard at many patriotic and memorial activities is something of which the troop is very proud. Downey citizens have watched the Troop and Pack for many years as they march down the street in the annual Holiday Lane Parade. Their annual Pancake Breakfast held at Apollo Park on the first Sunday of June serves as mini-reunion for all current and former members as well as earning much needed funds to support the camping, outdoor and training activities of the scouting program in Downey.
