Two weekends ago, right after school let out, we camped at Manker Flats in the mountains, and hiked to the top of Mt. Baldy (also known officially as Mt. San Antonio).
We rode the ski lift up to Baldy Notch
And then we sat and rested in the ski lift chairs:
Jim with two of our Scouts
The boys hiked along the Devil’s Backbone, across the mountain ridges.
This year, Troop 441 will be attending Forest Lawn Scout Reservation. We’ll meet at Apollo Park on Sunday, July 6, and return on Saturday July 12.

Our annual pancake breakfast will be held at Apollo Park on Sunday June 1st. Unfortunately, the ad in the Downey Patriot misstates the day as “Tomorrow”. We apologize for the error.
We will be in the Activities Room, near the basketball courts. Breakfast is $3 for pancakes, eggs, sausage and coffee. We hope you will join us!
On the third weekend of May, 2008, Troop 441 did a backpack trip to Pt. Mugu State Park. We stayed at La Jolla Campground, and took off for the peak before sunset. We arrived at the top just after sunset, but still managed to grab some gorgeous views. We hiked back to camp in the dark, under a full moon.
Twice a year, all the Boy Scout Troops in Frontier District (Downey, Norwalk, Cerritos, Bellflower) get together for a giant campout, a Camporee! Individual Troops and Scouts compete against each other in a variety of competitions, from First Aid, Pioneering, Gateway Building, Campsite Presentation, and Dinner. While Troop 441 did not win any individual event this year, all the boys had a great time. All in all, twelve units from Frontier District participated, with about 300 Scouts total.
This past weekend, the Troop went backpacking at Spruce Grove, in Santa Anita Canyon. Along the way, we stopped at Sturtevant waterfall, and then back tracked up the hill to cross along the top of the water fall.
After leaving Chantry Flats, we stopped for lunch at Sturtevant Waterfall. At 60 feet tall, it’s the largest in the San Gabriel Mountains. It rained the previous Wednesday, so there was plenty of water flowing over the top. To see our hiking route, check out Mapmyhike.com
One important part of scouting is that everyone learns how to cook. In fact, we try to eat better on the trail than we ever do at home. This time of year we’re allowed to use wood fires in the forest, and we took full advantage of that to boil water and cook our food.
On Sunday, we packed up our gear, and hiked the four miles home. It was a bit damp, and we packed our tents that way, and the boys were supposed to take them home to dry out. Hopefully they did!
All in all, a fun trip!
We did a short backpack trip this weekend, from Chantry Flats to Spruce Grove, with a quick stop at Sturtevant Waterfall.
